1
Make Sure Everyone Is OK
Before you do anything else, make sure that you are not injured. If you have other passengers, check with them as well. If someone has a serious injury, do not attempt to move them; instead, call 911 immediately. However, if everyone is relatively unscathed, you should move out of traffic as soon as you can. If your vehicle is still capable of driving, you can move it to the side of the road. If not, leave the vehicle and move to a safer spot.
2
Call the Authorities
After everyone has moved to safety, it's time to call the police. They may not send an officer out, but it's still important to report every crash. The dispatcher will let you know whether to wait for an officer or whether you can file the police report yourself later.
3
Take Photos
It's especially important to take pictures of the accident and the vehicles involved if the police aren't sending anyone; however, even if an officer is coming, it's a good idea to get everything photographed.
4
Write Down Necessary Information
It's important to document as much as you can of the accident, including writing down the date, time, and location. You should also get specific information from the other drivers involved: their full names, license plate numbers, contact information, driver's license numbers, and insurance information. Try to limit your talk to this; even apologizing can later be seen as an admission of guilt.
5
Consider Filing an Insurance Claim
If your vehicle has only minor damage, you may not wish to file a claim. However, if the damage seems to be greater than what your deductible would cover, you should contact your insurance provider.
